Benjamin E. Thompson, 1930-2011

Benjamin E. Thompson, 81, of Eau Claire, passed away Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire with his family near his side.

Ben was born in La Crosse on February 4, 1930, the son of Edwin and Ludmila (Novak) Thompson.  He pursued a lifelong teaching career spanning 50 years including all grades from kindergarten through graduate school and substituted in the Eau Claire Public Schools for 22 years.

Ben married Barbara Ann Hall on November 14, 1952, at Olivet Lutheran Church in La Crosse.

Milton O. Pella, 1914-2010

Milton O. Pella, age 96, passed away Saturday, August 21, 2010, at UW Hospital in Madison.

Dr. Milton Orville Pella was a native of Wisconsin, born in Wilmot in 1914. He attended elementary and high school in Burlington, earned his B.E. Degree at the Milwaukee State College and both his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. After completing his Master of Science degree, Dr. Pella spent four years in the military from 1942 to 1946.

The ECLIpSE project (Early Career Leaders in Inquiry Science Education) is a professional development opportunity focused on science teachers in their first five years of teaching.  The project consists of a two-day workshop in August, two “webinar” sessions in the fall of 2009 and a follow-up meeting at the spring 2010 Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers State Conference.

NCLT Professional Development

For the past three years, the National Center for Learning and Teaching in Nanoscale Science and Engineering (NCLT) has held professional development programs on nanoscale science and engineering across the nation, and we will be running the program again in the summer of 2009.  The program offers science teachers opportunities to work with nanoscale science and engineering researchers, science and engineering educators, and learning tool experts in content understanding, curriculum development, and hands-on laboratory experiments with nanoscale phenomena.
