LOFTY - Free Grad Credit for Elementary Teachers

LOFTY - Lift Off For Teachers and Youth (FREE Graduate Credit!)

The Lift-Off For Teachers and Youths (LOFTY) program is designed to provide parallel outcomes for both classroom teachers and the students with whom they work, while enhancing the exposure and interest to space-related science, design, and technology. In this two-day workshop (two 7-hour days) held on two Saturdays (September 24th and October 8th, 2011) elementary teachers will learn the science concepts behind the design and construction of bottle (water) rockets through problem solving, hands-on, minds-on constructivist learning practices. Teachers will also be provided with activities, ideas, and/or lessons to incorporate building bottle (water) rockets into their current curriculum, with an emphasis on discipline crossover (to allow teachers to spend more time discussing science, they will read books during reading time, have the students solve math problems relating to building rockets, etc). During the workshop, the teachers will build and launch several test rockets (based on the 2011 Division B Science Olympiad Bottle Rocket event rules) to be better prepared to help their students understand and construct bottle rockets during the school year.
