***Have You Seen***
An article in the November 10 issue of Inside Higher Education highlights the initiative by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) to increase the number of science and math teacher graduates. “Higher education institutions have the potential to bring about tremendous improvements in U.S. mathematics and science achievement by educating a larger number of highly qualified teachers,” said Richard Herman, chancellor at Urbana-Champaign, in the announcement. “Yet for too long institutions like mine have stood aside on this important issue. We cannot continue on the sidelines. One of the best paths for meeting the need for more science and mathematics teachers is to commit ourselves to this important initiative and inspire more of the nation’s top mathematics, science and engineering students to become our top teachers.” Read more about this at http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2008/11/10/nasulgc

***Your WSST Funds In Action***
Supporting the development of needs-based professional development for Wisconsin science teachers, your organization helped fund a group of WSST members and other science educators from across Wisconsin who met at the Pigeon Lake Field Research Station last July to brainstorm ideas for a new professional development initiative. Many issues, topics, and approaches were discussed. The common element across these
ideas was the importance of networking and developing leadership capacity. In order to continue to move this discussion forward, we are conducting a survey to determine the types of professional development opportunities that our members participate in. Please help us by completing this survey.

*** Committee Spotlight***
WSST FOUNDATION
The WSST Foundation's goal is to improve science education in Wisconsin by providing funds and guidance to the members of WSST. The Foundation serves the members of WSST through grants and scholarships, sponsoring retired WSST members activities, and sponsoring events such as Science Congress.
The Foundation's funds are separate from WSST and can not be used for the operation of the Society. It provides the money required to help make the goals of our parent organization, WSST, within reach of every member through member contributions, memorials, and bequeathals, fund raisers, and corporate support.
All members of the Foundation Committee are appointed by the president of WSST and serve for longer periods than regular committee members. This enables the members to develop contacts with corporate sponsors. The President of the Foundation is Don Vincent. Other members are Floyd Henschel 1st VP, Dana Krajcarek, 2nd VP, Steve Bower 3rd VP, Dick Seng Treasurer, and Margie Winter Secretary
This installment of WSST News is brought to you by
