Hello WSST,

I am a co-organizer of a new science advocacy group in Madison called Science Pub. We're affiliated with the Wisconsin Citizens for Science and the Madison Skeptics. I'd like to invite you to participate in an upcoming Science Pub. Information below. It's a great way to meet some very science-friendly members of the public and put a very positive foot forward on behalf of science education in Wisconsin. I already have commitments from 4 MMSD high school science teachers and a prof from UW Milwaukee (Andrew Petto) to participate. It would be great to have someone from WSST there as well. What: Madison Science Pub - a new, very friendly and important way of reaching out to our community about the importance of science and science education.

When: Sunday, October 25th at 2:00 pm

Where: Brocach Pub, on the square in Madison (7 W Main St)

The October pub will be a panel discussion on science education. I'm inviting several MMSD science teachers, a university level expert in science education, and a professional science journalist/ communicator.

The issue for the panel will be "what is the state of high school science education in Madison?" In the popular press and internet blogging, any time issues of creationism, intelligent design, or other culture war hotspots are discussed, blame is often assigned to the "deplorable state of science education." This forum is a chance for members of the public to meet some people in the trenches and here what is actually going on in high school science classrooms.

The Science Pub format is extremely interactive. It's more of a conversation than a lecture. Expect to introduce yourself, say a few words about where you work and what you do, and then be ready for questions and stories from the audience. We've averaged 30-40 attendees at our past two science pubs. If you want to see what it's like, come out this month, September 27th, at Brocach:
