Bioluminescence Field Trip at the BTC Institute & Promega Tour (MS, HS)

The BTC Institute offers Biotechnology Field Trips to middle and high school students and their teachers. Designed as a 1.5 - 5 hour visit to the BioPharmaceutical Technology Center, field trip experiences include hands-on laboratory experiments based on molecular biology techniques and, for high school students, an optional tour of Promega's production facilities.  For this WSST conference field trip, participants will perform a bioluminescence genetic transformation of the luciferase gene into E. coli.   After the lab activity participants will take a tour of Promega's production facility. www.btci.org

UW Tour: WID, Geology, and Physics (All)

Wisconsin Institute for Discovery. The WID is part of UW–Madison organized under its Graduate School. The state-of-the-art facility brings together scientists and researchers from a broad spectrum of disciplines, such as the arts, humanities, social sciences, education, business and law. The Geology Museum. Tours are approximately one hour long and feature hundreds of rock and mineral specimens, a black light mineral display and skeletons from dinosaurs and Ice Age animals.

UW Physics Museum. Welcome to the L.R. Ingersoll Museum! Established in 1918. Our exhibits give you a "hands-on" experience of physical concepts ranging from mechanics to modern physics in a demonstrational kid-friendly environment. In conjunction to our museum, you will find historical instruments and photos of Nobel Prize Winners in Physics from 1901-1993 on display along the corridors.

UW Biotech, State Lab of Hygiene, and UW Zoological Museum Tour (All)

The mission of the UW Biotechnology Center is to maximize the benefits of biotechnology to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Wisconsin System, state and nation by being an excellent quality, comprehensive, multidisciplinary biotechnology center that supports, coordinates, disseminates and advances biotechnology.  BioTrek is the Science Outreach Program of UWBC and of UW Extension with the goal of engaging the public by providing tours and workshops on campus and workshops anywhere in Wisconsin.

State Lab of Hygiene. “Everyday working in the lab to protect YOU” We provide Clinical, Water and Other Environmental, & Industrial Hygiene analytical services, specialized public health procedures, reference testing, training, technical assistance and consultation for private and public health agencies. In addition we are part of the UW-Madison through which we perform research and instruction related to public and environmental health protection.

University of Wisconsin Zoological Museum (UWZM).  UWZM provides support for research and teaching within the Department of Zoology, throughout the state and region, and nationally and internationally by collecting, curating, and managing scientific collections.  The UWZM serves as a state and federal repository for endangered and threatened species and is also one of the depositories for the Henry Vilas and Milwaukee County Zoos.

The museum contains over 500,000 specimens.  Collections include mammal and bird study skins and mounts, bird eggs and nests, and the H.W. Mossman histological collection; osteological assemblages representing all vertebrate classes, including thousands of specimens from the Galapagos Islands; alcohol-preserved specimens including fishes, amphibians, reptiles and the W.B. Quay collection of fluid mammals; modern and archaeological mollusks and snails; plankton collected by the Center for Limnology as part of the Long-term Ecologcical Research (LTER) project; paleontological specimens; historical objects and scientific instruments; and a research library of books, monographs and reprints.

Sustainability Tour
