Plan your fall 2020

WESTA was invited by the Michigan Earth Science Teachers Association to join them and promote their Geology field trip next summer to visit the Back 40 mine area of the UP.

Review our field experience 2019

Field Experience in Wisconsin Earth Science visits Door County and Niagara EscarpmentWhat a fantastic day we all had as we enjoyed the geology and environmental issues of the Niagara Escarpment of Door County on Saturday, October 19, 2019! We were enthusiastically led by Dr. John Luczaj, a Geoscience professor from UW-Green Bay who is an expert on the Niagara Escarpment. A huge Thank you to Wisconsin Society of Science Teachers who fully sponsored the event! We had the chance to get up close to the unique features of the escarpment at our many stops and learned about the many issues that karst topography can cause. Wequiock Falls, Bayshore Park, Potawatomi State Park were just some of the stops we made. Another one of our stops took us to an active sinkhole, where researchers have been able to measure that this disappearing stream reemerges 1 mile away in just 120 minutes! This fast-moving groundwater system poses many possible health issues for local residents. We also visited the shores of Lake Michigan and learned about the erosional effects of increased lake water levels on exposing shoreline. The last stop we made was to collect fossils along the beautiful beach shores of Algoma. Everyone had an awesome time and we each look forward to sharing our new knowledge and experiences with our students!A goal of WESTA (Wisconsin Earth Science Teachers Association) is to provide professional development opportunities such as field experiences in Earth Science for teachers of all levels from throughout Wisconsin. We want to provide opportunities to give teachers from every level and discipline the chance to learn the geologic history of Wisconsin so that they can share their experience with their students. Our only current fundraiser is the WESTA Rock Raffle held each year at the WSST state conference. Please consider donating items to the Rock Raffle, or supporting by purchasing bucket raffle tickets on Thursday at each year’s conference. AND Don’t forget to check out the Earth and Space Science Links / Apps under the Resources Link on the WSST.org website.
