4th Grade Forestry Lesson Guide
For the past few years, LEAF - Wisconsin's K-12 Forestry Education Program has been working on an in-depth project to revise and update our 4th Grade Forestry Lesson Guide, which focuses on Wisconsin's forest history. After including input from Tribal representatives, 4th grade educators and forest professionals from around the state, we are happy to announce the release of a newly revised guide. Lessons and activities in the updated guide represent a more accurate and inclusive history of forests while also fulfilling the requirements of Act 31. While each person attending the workshop will receive a print copy of the guide, it can also be accessed online via the LEAF website (scroll down and select 4th Grade Forestry Lesson Guide). With the release of the updated guide, LEAF is holding a workshop to introduce the guide to educators and provide them with the opportunity to get hands-on experience with the activities. While the guide is labeled as 4th grade, the lessons are appropriate for any grade level 3-6.
The workshop will take place at Schmeeckle Reserve (Stevens Point), on August 5, from 9:30-12:15 pm and is part of a larger, full-day (9:30-3:30) Forestry and Energy for the Elementary Classroom event we are partnering with KEEP - Wisconsin's K-12 Energy Education Program to offer. From 12:45-3:30, KEEP will be sharing a series of 4th Grade NGSS-linked lessons (and kit) that educators can use to engage students in energy concepts using the phenomenon of flipping a switch to light up a room. Each of the updated KEEP lessons have a climate and career connection included. While the KEEP lessons embed 4th Grade NGSS standards, the lessons are an appropriate introduction to energy concepts for any students in the 3-6 grade band.
We would love to have you or pre-service educators you work with join us to learn more about the updated curriculum of both programs. The registration fee to attend the full-day event, or either morning or afternoon session is $40. An early bird discount of $20 is available for all who register 14+ days in advance of the event.
